The Center for Neurologic Study Website is designed to present our current activities on the Internet. CNS is a non profit organization dedicated to researching the cause and treatment of neurological diseases. The Center was founded in 1979 with the intent of helping patients and families who have been affected by presently incurable neurologic disease. To accomplish this, the Center focused on experimental treatment and patient/family support and education. Along with others CNS was instrumental in the development of Interferon as a treatment modality. This is now one of the standard treatments for multiple sclerois.
And we contine to work at the forefront of neurological therapy. Toward this end we collaborate with Biotech companies and universites in an effort to develop cutting edge therapies for neurologic disorders. Most recently we are involved in the development of antisense molecules which could represent a major opportunity to treat hereditable diseases of the nervous system such as familial amyotrophic lateral sclerois and Huntingtons disease.
The seminal discovery of DMQ at CNS has resulted in the award of 5 U.S. patents. This drug combination is under development by Avanir pharmaceutical corporation for the treatment of emotionality and chronic pain. Two clinical trials involving patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and multiple sclerosis have been completed. Both trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of the drug which, if approved, will be marketed under the name Zenvia. In August, 2009 a fourth trial of Zenvia was completed.
Our website is the latest in a long standing effort to provide patient/family education and support. Beginning in 1979, CNS sponsored one of the first neurologic-based educational programs. While we have discontinued our support group our support of patients and families continues in the form of individual counseling and the posting of valuable information on our website. At some point, we anticipate being able to bring our support group & lectures into peoples living rooms, possibly in an interactive mode. But for the moment it is necessary to visit or call us in person.
It is our hope that you will join our virtual community, partnering with us to advance the cause of neurologic research and treatment.
